Is
the Kartoo flash version slower ?
The
flash version is a little slower at the beginning
because you have to download 20ko in order to
launch your very first search. But as soon
as you carry out a second search, things go
faster as all the graphics have already been loaded.
Does
a standard HTML version exist ?
Of course! And you
can select it as default. All you have to do is
click on the HTML command (which you can reach
through Options). However, the Flash version has
more search options.
I
asked for a word but the map I got did not contain
it. Why ?
If all the sites have this word in common, it
does not appear on the map so that the map does
not become overloaded.
I
wrote the name of a site but it did not appear
on the first map. Why ?
The site has certainly been wrongly listed
within the search engine itself. In other words,
it does not belong to the right classification
in relation to the word you typed. You should
try to specify your query context by adding
words in the search box and then look at the resulting
maps. As a last resort, you can manually select
the search engines you wish to question.
How
do I activate the Natural language Option ?
All you need to do is type a question in the
search box, but don't forget the question-mark
!
Is
KartOO technology more pertinent than other search
engines ?
It often is but not always... In fact, KartOO
technology analyses the words you are asking for
and then decides to question the most accurate
search engines.
For
example, if your request is a question ending
with a question-mark, KartOO will query the search
engines that are specialized in natural language.
As to the notion of relevance: when you ask for
the word "ray" for example, you
may mean the sea animal or the light
device. The results you obtain may therefore
be accurate or totally irrelevant to what you
are looking for.
What is significant about KartOO in such a situation
is that this technology provides a map that summarizes
all the various and possible topics so that retrieved
sites are in fact grouped into a form of topical
"family". A list, i. e., a linear classification
of search results, could not represent all the
applications connected to a word like "nuclear"
for example, and above all, a list could not display
the links existing between the applications.
How
many sites are indexed on KartOO ?
Usually, search engines only cover a small part
of the web, around 20% for the most effective
ones. KartOO technology is a metacrawler,
that is a search tool which summarizes the
results of various search engines. Therefore,
it covers the exact proportion corresponding to
the combination of the engine indexes. KartOO's
search capacity is slightly superior to that of
a standard search engine though there cannot be
any wonderful results: the various search engines
have a lot of their pages in common and combining
the various results does not give you such a wide
coverage of the information available online,
especially as far as the famous invisible web
is concerned.
Is
it possible to download KartOO ?
You will be able to do so shortly as we
will be offering a more powerful version of KartOO
which can be installed on your computer and will
thus enable you to obtain faster access to your
searches.
Do
I need to write the entire word ?
With KartOO technology, you can use a wide range
of syntax. It is possible to write only the
beginning of a word and end it with * . However,
when you type "Kart*" for example,
the results you will obtain may be related to
the words "Kartoo", "Karting"
or others... It may be a useful method when you
are not sure of the spelling of a word or its
ending but very often, the best thing to do is
to try and write the different spellings. Moreover,
using this method may alter the number and quality
of search results because only a few of the search
engines understand this syntax.
Will
a query be modified whether I use capital letters,
or inverted commas, or not ?
Using capital letters or inverted commas may
have some effect on your results. However,
not all the questioned engines take such devices
into account. KartOO will first and foremost question
the search engines that are the most accurate
according to the syntax you have chosen.
- Using double quotes
allows you to obtain the words exactly in the
form in which they were entered in your search
results. Thus, when you ask for "Leonardo
da Vinci", you will get all the pages which
contain these very words situated next to one
another. In fact, when you place a series of words
between inverted commas, search engines consider
that you set up a phrase search and only documents
containing the actual phrase will be retrieved.
- Using capital letters
may mean for the engines that your are looking
for a precise word. But if you stay in lower
case, you will obtain the pages in which the word
appears both in lower case and in capital letters.
